Does altitude affect the taste of coffee?

-

Although altitude does not directly influence the flavor of coffee, it does have a great impact on the characteristics of the bean. At higher altitudes, coffee plants face more difficult conditions to ripen the cherries, as cool temperatures and lower oxygen levels slow down the flowering and ripening process. This causes the beans to be smaller and denser, as the plant dedicates more resources to their development.

This increase in the density of the beans implies a greater concentration of essential oils and sugars. As a result, coffee prepared with these beans tends to have a sensation of greater body and a greater aromatic intensity, although this does not necessarily mean that the higher the altitude at which a coffee is grown the better or more complex it will be in the cup.

Even so, it is always important to know at what altitude the coffee was planted as this information will help you to better understand the profile of the bean and the characteristics that you can expect in the cup.
