What is happening with CQI, SCA and Q-Graders?

-

A few days ago, the Specialty Coffee Association (SCA) and the Coffee Quality Institute (CQI) announced an important change for the specialty coffee sector: from now on, the SCA will be the only entity in charge of certifying Q-Graders. This decision marks the end of the exclusive role that the CQI has played for years in the management of these certifications.

Along with this change, the official adoption of the Coffee Value Assessment (CVA) model was also confirmed. It is a cupping methodology that the SCA has been developing and progressively introducing since 2023, it will replace the traditional protocol used since 2004.

The CVA will not only be the new framework within which Q-Arabica Graders and Q-Robusta Graders will be certified and calibrated, but will also be the evaluation system that they themselves will use to grade coffees from October 2025 onwards.
