DID YOU KNOW THAT YOU CAN MEASURE THE INTENSITY OF YOUR COFFEE?

-

Has it ever happened to you that your coffee tastes good but is too intense or, on the contrary, too diluted? To better understand this and to be able to improve this parameter, we seek to measure its exact intensity using the TDS.

Total Dissolved Solids (TDS) refers to the total dissolved solids, in other words, it is all the soluble material that the water was able to extract from the pellet.

This number speaks of the concentration and intensity of the beverage, the lower the TDS the less intense or more diluted the beverage will be. The higher the TDS, the more intense or concentrated the beverage will be.

This number is calculated using a tool called a refractometer, which turns on a light and measures the refraction of the light through a sample of the infusion and thus calculates the percentage of the sample that is dissolved solids in the beverage.

If you want to learn much more about espresso extractions and how to modify and calculate the intensity in your coffees, we invite you to enroll in our SCA Barista Intermediate course, where we not only teach you all about the TDS and its practical use, but also how to perform a perfect and consistent extraction of your espresso coffees.
